Catholic Scripture Study Links
We all stand on the shoulders of giants, and there’s no need to reinvent the wheel when studying the Bible. Below are a number of on-line Catholic resources that may help you as you begin to deepen your understanding of the Scriptures. I have found these helpful to me, and still use many of these when preparing the Liturgical Bible Study that appears on this site.
US Catholic Bishops – New American Bible
The official site of the
U.S. Catholic Bishops, it includes a calendar and text for all the Mass
readings. It also has the complete text of the New American Bible.
Daily Scripture Readings and Meditations
This site, administered by Don Schwager provides thoughtful meditations on every Scripture reading in the year. It also has good seasonal (Advent, Lent) material. http://www.rc.net/wcc/readings/
St. Charles Borromeo Bible Studies
This terrific website which also has many good
apologetics and catechetical resources, provides very good Bible Studies
for every Sunday and major Feast day of the year.
St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology
This website, from Dr. Scott Hahn, popular
theologian, Bible scholar, apologist and famous convert to Catholicism,
offers several Bible studies at the beginning, intermediate and advanced
levels. It also has many other good resources.
Christian Community Bible – Pastoral Bible Foundation
A lesser known Catholic translation of the
Scriptures, this Bible and commentary comes mostly out of a Third World
view compared to the one we’re used to. Completely orthodox and very
pastoral, it is a nice alternative. This is a link to an on-line version.
Fr. William Most Theological Collection
One of the most revered modern scholars, this web page is a collection of many of his writings including commentaries on several (but not all) books of the Bible. http://www.catholicculture.org/culture/library/most/
Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition, Bible Search
A searchable RSV-CE translation of the
Bible from EWTN.
For a fee, this site will send bible
verses, insights from the saints and/or papal reflections weekly as text
messages to your cell phone.
Divine Revelation – Catholic Biblical Apologetics
This site contains good background information in the
Scriptures including sections about inspiration, canonicity, and the
history of the Bible.
Catholic Scripture Study International
Scripture studies for groups based on specific books
of the Bible. Contains resources to start your own Catholic Bible Study.
Fr. Felix Just, S.J., Ph.D.
contains a variety of materials, mostly related to biblical and liturgical
studies, intended for scholars, teachers, students, pastors, believers,
seekers, and others.
Presentation Ministries Bible Resources
A charismatic community that distributes free
booklets of Scripture meditations and has several articles on studying the
Scriptures from a spiritual standpoint.
To Tell You The Whole Truth About the Church and the Holy Bible
From the website of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic
Church in Mississippi that has the Bible studies mentioned above. Gives
you the facts on where we got the Bible.
Life After Sunday Bible Studies
Catholic Bible studies available for groups or
individuals on a number of topics.
Searchable Douay-Rheims Biblehttp://www.intratext.com/X/ENG0011.htm
Our Father’s Plan
Popular Scripture study program by Scott Hahn and
Jeff Cavins that rather intensively leads you through salvation history so
that you get the “Big Picture” of the Bible which is vital for
understanding what you read.
The Great Adventure: A Journey
Through the Bible
program to “Our Father’s Plan” above, this helps you to become
familiar with the flow of Biblical history so that you know where
particular books, characters and stories fit in.
The following are monthly magazines that give you
background information and meditations on the daily Mass Scripture
readings. I’ve used them all and would recommend any of them.
